My friend Debbie was kind, generous, honest and fun. She loved her church and got great comfort from it. She loved her family and was so proud of her grandchildren.
I will miss her at rug hooking on Mondays and trying new restaurants for lunch. Rest in peace my friend—I will never forget you.

Debbie joined the Beaconsfield Hooking Crafters Guild in 2003, while continuing her nursing career. She volunteered as President from 2004 to 2005. Always smiling, she made everyone feel welcome, offered great ideas, and participated in all our guild activities including our yearly Fête nationale booths.

For our latest June picnic, I took this photo of Debbie and Carolyn with Leslie and another fellow rug hooker. I wanted to capture the event and share the wonderful day with all of you.
When I asked if I could take a picture, Debbie was, as always, ready with her beautiful smile.
Every time I asked for help as a newer rug hooker, she went out of her way to help me. And if she couldn't, she would point me to the right person who could.
She even lent me her rug hooking frame so I could measure it and make my own. I still remember showing it to her when I had finished it. She told me it was great. Of course it wasn't—she was simply being the kind, generous, and beautiful soul that she was.
It was a great pleasure to have known her, even if only for a short time. You will be deeply missed, Debbie.

| Debbie Séguin, My First Rug. Adapted from a Stencil for Tole Painting |
My First Rug Adapted from a Stencil for Tole Painting 2003 38 ½ x 24 inches This is my first rug. I had a stencil for tole painting from a craft magazine which my husband used to paint the two doors of our dining room cabinet. I decided to make a matching rug. Lois taught me how to hand dye the wool for the sky, which I cut into #6 strips. The clouds are hooked with yarn. For the house, I used an old jacket which a friend gave me. And the grass is wool I purchased at the Guild. The rug hangs in our home. *** Town Rittermere 2004 32 ½ x 5 inches This was, I think, the second rug I hooked. I loved the pattern. I have it over my bedroom door. I used #6 cut. *** |
Friends are Forever
Rittermere
I made this for my best friend Sue. I hand-dyed some old woollen clothes. The blue in this rug was left over from what I had dyed for my first rug.

Woolly Sheep
Original
2011
12.5 x 9 inches
I wanted to hook my sister Susan a little rug. While I was at the Pointe-Claire Shopping Center, I went into the wool store and there I spotted this Icelandic wool. I knew then I was going to hook a sheep with it! Susan was very delighted when I gave it to her. I hand dyed Dorr wool for the sky and for the grass, and I used a #6 cut.

Boats at Harbour in Nova Scotia
Adapted
Our family went to Nova Scotia and we bought a magnet for a souvenir. I had it on my fridge and decided one day that it would make a great rug! Alice and Betty, two former hookers, came to my house. Alice had prepared four squirt bottles of sky colours.
On our picnic table in the backyard we squirted the sky colours on my prepared Dorr wool. The outcome was beautiful! I hooked the sky in order of the way it was dyed! So much fun, such great memories! I made it for my Mom! I enjoyed hooking every loop! She loved it! It hung in her living room! She has since passed, so it now hangs in our hallway.

I had seen my friend Sue’s wooden angel in her living room, and immediately asked if I could trace the wood and make a hooked rug! I love the results!

Show & Tell / January - March 2025
Debra Seguin / Beaconsfield, Qc Maria, you did a wonderful job putting everything together! Loved reading the old articles, and newspaper clippings about the guild. I’ve been a member since 2003, I love rughooking, the fellowship, the stress it releases as I pull each loop, the wool, admiring everyone else’s work, it’s a great fibre art! Loved the rugs displayed, beautiful! Wherever rughooking ends up with Covid-19, whether we end up meeting in a hockey arena, Zoom, outside Centennial Park, let’s continue to pass on this beautiful craft on to further generations. God Bless.
