Mittens

Mitten-making Workshop    On October 21 and October 28, Kitt organised a mitten-making workshop that brought warmth and creativity together. Each participant arrived with wool fabrics, ready to transform them into snug mitten pieces with the pattern Kitt provided. During our first session, creativity overflowed as we embellished the top mitten pieces. Some of us used the Sizzix machine to craft appliqués, while others dabbled in felting, embroidered delightful details, or hooked the mitten tops. The following Monday, our workshop space buzzed with the hum of sewing machines brought by some members. The room was filled with happy chatter as we stitched the mitten pieces together. We then used soft polar fleece to create the warm linings using the same pattern pieces. Preparing the mitten pieces for sewing. Our workshop space buzzed with the hum of sewing machines. And voilà, the fruits of our labor: mittens that tell the story of our fun, shared experience. Thank you to Kitt a...

Tiny Treasures Workshop with Sara Judith    January 13-15, 2024. Thanks to Mary, our Guild was very fortunate to have Sara Judith, renowned rug hooking artist and teacher from Nelson BC, come to Centennial Hall to present us with a 3-day workshop called Tiny Treasures. Claire and Kitt provided some yummy snacks for the coffee breaks. Sara, Mary, and Claire. Our first day was challenged by a snowstorm! However, Carolyn M came to the rescue and set up a Zoom room for us which half of the group made precious use of on Saturday. The workshop was really fun. We learned about design principles and the use of colour, and how these elements differ for tiny rugs compared to larger rugs. We each made a tiny hooked rug using #2 and #3 cuts and yarns. We also each made a tiny punched rug using a #14 Oxford punch and learned about creating special effects. Juliet and Fay are enjoying this workshop. Joanne is already finishing her third rug! Carolyn E and Chris, who is holding up her Scotla...

A total of 14 new members! Six enthusiastic students in Dawna’s Beginners class. Claire, Laura, Isabelle, and Ti are preparing for the September 23 rd    Artisans’ Fair. September 25, we had a special visit from Judith Lilley, a talented rug hooker from Kamouraska, QC. Judy and Emmy have been emailing each other since 2017 but had never met in person. Monday November 21 Hook-In Pinecone workshop The Festive Season has arrived! There was an enthusiastic response to Claire’s idea of a pinecone workshop, the instructions for which appear in the November-December 2022 issue of Rug Hooking magazine. Participants were delighted to each receive a kit, instructions included, carefully prepared by Claire. We simply had to bring glue or a glue gun, sharp scissors, and $5 to cover supplies. Those who had time also made some lavender branches, created in a similar fashion. Wool fabrics were donated by Kitt, Claire, and Dawna. Thank you, Claire, for a wonderful workshop!   Pinecones and branches. Juliet, Barbara, and Carolyn E. Barbara and Carolyn E. Sylvia and Debbie . Karen and Dawna. How to finish the edging of a rug using cording    June 6, 2022 At our last Monday hook-in of the season, Dawna treated us to a demonstration of how to finish the edging of a rug using cording.  Standing: Karen, Sue, Jacques, Brenda. Sitting: Kitt, Dawna. Here is a recap of the technique: 1) To prepare the cording, use masking tape to “finish” the ends, like the tips of a shoelace. 2) Lay the cord down snuggly up against the last row of hooking. Do not start at a corner. Baste the cord in place. 3) Using wool yarn, whip over and under the cord, covering it uniformly and completely. 4) Lay another cord, which could be a different thickness, tucked up against the whipped cord. Repeat the basting and whipping process. You could choose a different coloured yarn. 5) For the final cording, wrap the background fabric up and over to the front and tuck it underneath the outer cord and complete your final whipping. Again, you could choose a different coloured yarn. Thank you, Dawna...

OHCG 2022 Logo OHCG Annual Conference 2022         Virtual Conference    2022 Theme: Folklore    April 30th, 2022    OHCG members once again enjoyed this year’s Annual Conference via Zoom. Events included guest speakers, a slideshow of Branch Rug Displays, a slideshow of rugs in the competition, a virtual visit into the homes of several OHCG rug hooking artists (what a treat that was!), a live virtual auction, and more. We are so proud that our Guild member Jacques Lepage entered two rugs into the competition: “La Sucrerie” into the Wide-cut category and “Les Anciens - Jour de  lavage” (Old Timers – Wash Day) into the Folklore category. Fabulous rugs, Jacques! Throughout the month of April, there were numerous superb Zoom workshops. La Sucrerie. Designed by Jacques Lepage and Isabelle Rollin. Hooked by Jacques Lepage. Loretta Moore’s Rug Finishing Workshop       Can you imagine that there are many ways to finish a rug? Well, today, we were all delighted to take part in Loretta Moore’s in-person workshop. Loretta has a step-by-step approach to understanding several techniques using both hand and machine stitching, followed by having us practice an array of possibilities of finishing rugs. She stimulated our imaginations, and we all left feeling much more adept. Thank you Loretta! And thanks also to all who set up at the beginning and who cleaned up at the end. Busy at the sewing machines. Claire prepares her mini rug for finishing. Loretta demonstrates up-close. A thoroughly inspired group.

Saint Henri Retreat_  Ermitage Sainte-Croix Pierrefonds, QC          February 15th-16th, 2020              By Chris Delaney           What a wonderful weekend! What made it special was the gathering of guilds from not only Montreal but also from the Ottawa area. Present were members of St Henri, Beaconsfield, Old Forge and Burris Falls (hope I didn't miss any!). There were hours of talking, laughing, sharing, consultation, encouragement, admiration and we did hook as well. It was a great success!  Thanks to Loretta, Isabelle and Jacques for vending their fabulous wares!  Carol P. from Old Forge sent me some photos of Saturday evening - the view from the dining room. Enjoy the photos! We had 26  Rug Hookers on Saturday and 25 on Sunday! It was cozy in  the workroom Loretta, Leslie and Carolyn working on a colour plan There were 30 items...
