Lorayne Charenko / Photo: Marilyn Charenko. Lorayne Charenko It was in 1978 that Lorayne and I each joined the Guild, and we became particularly good friends. In those days, the Guild met in a hut which stood on the west side of Centennial Hall. It was later torn down, and then our meetings moved into Centennial Hall. Lorayne contributed greatly at the Guild hook-ins. Always elegantly dressed and gracious, she was friendly with everyone and always gave generously of her time to helping Guild members, offering advice on hooking techniques and encouraging others to share their talents. She was a master at the carving technique which she especially enjoyed doing. Although Lorayne now finds it difficult to get out she still maintains close contact with the Guild, following the activities and

This beautiful and unique piece has an interesting story behind its creation.     Maureen Rowe. Wash, not War Maureen Rowe Wash, not War 2009 Approximately 12-14 x 10-12 inches #4 cut wool on linen Judith Dallegret had a studio group that did the 12 months of the year (The Calendar Project, please see below) and our theme was “Laundry Lines”. Remembrance Day

November 11 - Remembrance Day          Today, we take two minutes of silence to reflect on the freedoms and peace we have in our lives. We honour, thank, and remember those who served and sacrificed their lives for us. In Flanders Fields  by Lt Col John McCrae  (Composed at the Battlefront on May 3, 1915  during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium)  In Flanders fields the poppies blow  Between the crosses, row on row,  That mark our place: and in the sky  The larks still bravely singing fly  Scarce heard amid the guns below.  We are the dead: Short days ago,  We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,  Loved and were loved: and now we lie  In Flanders fields!  Take up our quarrel with the foe  To you, from failing hands, we throw  The torch: be yours to hold it high  If ye break faith with us who die,  We shall not sleep, though poppies grow  In Flanders fields. Debbie Séguin Debbie Séguin In 2002, while visiting friends at their beautiful Nova Scotia farmstead, Debbie was introduced to a home-full of stunning rugs, a cutter, a hooking frame, and a vast collection of wool. Debbie thought back to her Newfoundland grandparents: her grandfather, a fisherman, and her grandmother, a rug hooker during the winter months, when fishing season and salting the cod on the flake was over. And Debbie was hooked! Back from her trip, she noticed a story about the Guild in the News and Chronicle, and despite her ongoing nursing career, she was free on Mondays and joined the BHCG. Two years later, in 2004, Debbie was president! Emmy Maten, Vice-President To find more about Debbie on our Blog, please use the search tool in the top right corner. *** Debbie Séguin, My First

Original Jeanne Osler  Memories of Lerici, Italy Original 22.5 x 37 inches  This story comes from the late Jeanne Osler’s son John.  My family and I were living in Italy from 1996 to 1999. We rented an old home (~400 years old) on the grounds of an Italian villa in Pugliola, Italy (near Lerici as Mom identified on the tag on the back). It was once the living quarters for the servants and was called “Il Casalino”, or the little house. Mom and Dad came to visit us along with my Aunt Norma. Mom was fascinated by the hand-painted tiles on the floor in the living room. She took pictures, made sketches, and then created a beautiful hooked rug replica of that floor. My wif

Visit our Blog to see the rugs showcased in the past.    Show & Tell / Memories #1 : Family Memories November is about Memories and a time of reflection, of capturing thoughts or feelings of the past, of wanting to keep something or someone close to the heart. Whether representing the daily life of our ancestors, capturing childhood memories, or creating an image of a special trip, each rug is hooked with feelings we want to portray and keep.
