Tribute to Maria Romero: o ur webmaster from 2008 to 2026 Researched and respectfully submitted by Emmy Maten Maria gave us a wonderful gift in 2008: she had a vision and with President Denise Vandenbemden’s enthusiastic OK, created the Beaconsfield Hooking Crafters Guild website! She nurtured it with beautiful ideas that showcased our guild’s work. The website has become a record of our history, preserving photos and stories, some even from before its launch. Maria Romero / Webmaster  After holding the position of  Webmaster/Designer for 18 years ( 2008-2026 ), it is time to pass this role on to the members who have volunteered to promote the Guild on the Internet and Social Media: Elizabeth Craig, Emmy Maten, and Laura Di Iorio. Congratulations on your new position. I know you'll be amazing! As a past member and volunteer, I have really enjoyed working for the Guild, creating and updating the Website with the help of the Web Committee members. After 18 years of creating and keeping our website, blog, Facebook, and Instagram running smoothly, our wonderful webmaster Maria is retiring!  While no one could ever truly replace her, the three of us are teaming up to carry the torch.  We recently met with Maria to learn the ins and outs, transfer usernames and passwords, and soak up as much wisdom as possible.  Laura graciously hosted the information session, complete with delicious cappuccinos and a lovely summer pasta salad. This logo, to mark the 50 years of the Beaconsfield Hooking Crafters Guild, is a variation of the 40th anniversary logo, also  designed by our Webmaster, Maria Romero.   The curved lines represent the passage of time: 5 decades, as well as the strips of textiles used in rug hooking. A palette of yellows reinforces the golden celebration.

Lights, Camera, Hooking!  On Monday, June 2, a professional photographer joined us to capture high-resolution photos of rugs contributed by our members for a special project: turning them into greeting cards! These unique cards will be available for purchase, both for members and at upcoming guild outreach events. Each member was invited to submit one rug, and—thanks to the seamless coordination of Jacques and Isabelle—the photographer managed to document every entry, along with a few extras. The photos are currently being processed, and we’re thrilled to announce that the finished greeting cards will debut just in time for our 50th anniversary exhibition this fall. Stay tuned! I really got to know Maria when working with her for our 45th anniversary celebrations, all done virtually on our website throughout 2020, with 85 posts exhibiting many of our Guild members’ talents. Maria is meticulous and has endless energy, enthusiasm, ideas, and creativity, not to mention a heart of gold! The Beaconsfield Hooking Crafters Guild was founded by Lois J. Morris in 1975 and has grown and flourished throughout the years. Many members started rug hooking because they remember their mother or grandmother, and in my case my grandfather, hooking rugs which welcomed people at the front door, adorned the floor at the wood stove, or assured warm feet at the bedside. Since those times, rugs now also decorate tables, walls, footstools, or become handbags, cushions, teapot cozies, 3-dimensional art, and the ideas keep coming! We welcome newcomers to this fibre art, just as we welcome experienced rug hookers. We meet on Mondays from September to May in the charming Centennial Hall in Beaconsfield, Quebec. May 2022 bring you much joy and fun and plenty of inspiration to fire up your creativity!  Our Show and Tell themes for this year are kindled by New Year’s resolutions and start with “Try something new”. We will resume our usual schedule of four Show and Tells per year. Since the summer, our members have enjoyed in-person hook-ins and things were starting to feel somewhat normal again. However, the pandemic has shown that we are on a very rocky, unpredictable road, and in-person hook-ins may or may not continue. November 11 - Remembrance Day             Today, we take two minutes of silence to reflect on the freedoms and peace we have in our lives. We honour, thank, and remember those who served and sacrificed their lives for us, and we acknowledge the courage of those who still serve .   In 2021 we commerate the 100th anniversary of the Remembrance Poppy in Canada.
