Punch Needle Workshop

Oxford Punch Needle Intro Workshop

Punch Needle Workshops
Sept 17 & 24, 2018
Centennial Hall

By Dawna Matthew

In June 2018, Ti Seymour and Dawna Matthew went to Vermont to take part in Amy Oxford’s Punch Needle Rug Hooking Teacher Certification Program. Punch needle Rug Hooking has seen resurgence in popularity and Amy is working hard to keep up with the demand for both materials and teachers. Ti is planning on starting a group in Abu Dhabi where she is currently living.

In September 2018, Dawna gave 2 workshops for our members who were kind enough to let her practice her teaching skills!

September 17 she showed how to work with regular Oxford punches and rug yarn. Members had a choice of patterns and a wide range of colours to choose from. Everyone caught on quickly and was well on their way to finishing by the end of the day. You can see some of their wonderful work below.

Then on September 24 the day was devoted to fine punches and 2 ply yarn. This allowed for more detail in the design and of course required more time. Members who didn’t finish in class took their piece home to complete. Again the results were beautiful!

Finnengans' Market Hook-In

What a Lovely Day!

By Dawna Matthew

On Saturday, September 22, Isabelle Rollin and Jacques Lepage, who are regular vendors at Finnegan’s Market in Hudson, organized an outing for our group. We invited our friends from St. Henri, Chateauguay Valley and Martintown to join in on the fun and come and hook with us at Finnegan’s. What a wonderful time we had! It was a warm, sunny day and we had so many pleasant chats with members of the public who were intrigued with our work. We owe a big “Thank You” to Isabelle & Jacques and also to the Aird family, who own and operate Finnegan’s, for their hospitality.

Punch Needle Workshop

Oxford Punch Needle Intro Workshop

Punch Needle Workshops, Sept 17 & 24, 2018

Teacher: Dawna Matthew

This 1 day workshop is designed to introduce you to the Oxford Punch Needle technique of rug hooking.

You will punch a small 5” x 7” frame with a design of your choosing. You may draw your own or choose from several that I will have on hand, and trace using Red Dot.

I will supply:
- a 5” x 7” wooden frame with the backing (Monk’s Cloth) already attached
- wool yarn, in a variety of colours, to punch your design
- a hand out with instructions, pointers, etc..

Most of you have your own punch (or punches) and I have several which you may borrow for the class.

The cost for the 1 day workshops is as follows:
- 25$ for the fine punch needle class using 2 ply wool yarn
- 30$ for the regular punch needle class using 4 ply rug yarn

You will need:
- sharp, pointy scissors
- a permanent marker to draw or trace your pattern
- your stitch gauge from your punch needle box if you have one
- your smile!

The workshops will run from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm with a 30 minute lunch break.

Below are samples done with both fine and regular punches.

Note: We can decide on Sept 10 which workshop will run which day, ne  on Sept. 17th and one on Sept 24.

Please let me know if you are interested so I can prepare the frames.
