Hooking Matters          BHCG was delighted to be featured in the May, 2021, issue of Hooking Matters , The International Guild of Handhooking Rugmakers’ newsletter. Our members were disappointed when the Triennial which would have taken place in Newfoundland had to be cancelled due to Covid. What a road trip that would have been!!! This might be a good time to consider joining TIGHR. TIGHR _ The International Guild of Handhooking Rugmakers Oct 8 to 11, 2018 By Dawna Matthew TIGHR held its 2018 triennial in Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales, October 8th to 11th. Approximately 150 rugmakers came together and certainly achieved TIGHR’s mission which is to spread friendship through fibre crafts around the world. Some attendees came from as far away as Japan and Australia. Great Britain, USA and Canada were also well represented. Two of our members, Ti Seymour and Dawna Matthew were thrilled to be able to join in on the camaraderie, the workshops and the day trips. Heather Ritchie and her amazing team put together a program that involved classes, outings to various attractions in the Dales and several delicious banquets, one in a 13th century castle and one at Tan Hill, the highest pub in Britain. St Andrew’s Church in Grinton hosted the opening ceremonies and housed a wonderful show of rugs. The village of Reeth, where most participants found accommodation, open...

Submitted by Ti Seymour President BHCG Members of BHCG will be rug hooking with the Grade 6 children from Sherwood Forest Elementary School in celebration of their Rug which has been displayed at 2 exhibitions (BHCG's 40th Anniversary Exhibition Sept 2015 and TIGHR, Victoria Oct 2015). Backing has been mounted on ready to hang picture frames for the children to hook on.  The inspiration is: Bubble Writing as inspiration The children will hook an initial in bubble font with a selection of precut brightly coloured wool.  This piece is for them to take home for themselves or to gift this holiday season. A video will be taken of this event to document the number of children taking part in the hope they can set a world record according to the Guinness World Records - an exciting achievement for any child to appear in this popular book.  An application has been submitted to GWR and it is our intent to follow through with an organized event in the future. Gene Shepherd's Challenge

Image
A New Year's Resolution for 2015: Teach a Child to Hook! By Ti Seymour This challenge by Gene Shepherd really struck a chord within our Guild - whether nurturing our own children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews or from working as a teacher before retirement. It gave us a challenge that sparked the most amazing chain reaction. Little do the children realize how much attention their rug has received. Not only was it featured in our 40th Anniversary Exhibition in September, it then went off to Victoria, B.C. and was exhibited at TIGHR. Luckily there is this photographic proof, which will accompany their rug back to Sherwood Forest Elementary School this week. So proud of these kids and their achievement. TIGHR - Back to Nature, October 4-7, 2015, Victoria, B.C. Submitted by Ti Seymour TIGHR 2015 I was in awe of this conference - the table of discussions/workshops/tours on offer and the professionalism of the rug hookers present.  After registration on the first afternoon there was a Friendship Mat exchange alongside a cheese and wine reception, a great ice breaker.  I met Debra Smith, Editor of Rug Hooking Magazine, Susan Feller and Lori Laberge; that was an amazing and humbling start. The following few days I attended two panel discussions: Defining Professionalism - Moderator: Susan Feller;  Panelists: Jo Franco, Lori LaBerge, Rachelle LeBlanc and Deb Smith; Approaching a New Design - Moderator: Karen Kaiser;  Panelists: Stephanie Allen-Krauss, Linda Rae Coughlin, Maggie White. And two workshops: Proddy Cluster Flowers with Gene Shepherd; Playing with Plaids with Laurie Wiles. I also attended five presentations: 1. Sylvia Olsen: A Coast Sali...
