Preparation started weeks before, as Helen drew nine unique designs for us to choose from. She taught us how to transfer these patterns onto weavers’ cloth and provided us with all the information on supplies like mini-punch needles, non-slip hoops, scissors, and embroidery threads in our chosen colours.
As the workshop began, Helen passed around her collection of mini-punched rugs, each a feast for the senses. Participants marvelled at her techniques to create swirly skies, folk art pieces, and delicate florals. Helen’s clever use of colour and thread types, either Valdani or DMC embroidery threads or luxurious Merino fingering wool yarns, was impressive.

“I love how the loops’ direction creates a flowing movement” said one participant, “and changes in loop height gives the rug a three-dimensional look that almost invites you to touch it.”
Helen showed us how to start by punching around the edge of our patterns. Just threading the punch needle was a challenge at first—many of us needed a few tries. We quickly learned that keeping the Weavers’ cloth tight in the hoop was key; otherwise, the loops wouldn’t stay put.

Those with more experience wandered around, offering tips and encouragement. One helper shared, “Don’t worry if your first loops look messy. Mine did too, but practice makes perfect!” The room buzzed with friendly advice and laughter as everyone found their rhythm.
Three hours flew by, and most were still working on their outlines by the end. Yet, the excitement didn’t fade. Everyone was keen to continue practicing at home and at future hook-ins. Many appreciated how portable mini-punching is—easy to pack and perfect for crafting on the go.
