OHCG members once again enjoyed this year’s Annual Conference via Zoom. Events included guest speakers, a slideshow of Branch Rug Displays, a slideshow of rugs in the competition, a virtual visit into the homes of several OHCG rug hooking artists (what a treat that was!), a live virtual auction, and more.

We are so proud that our Guild member Jacques Lepage entered two rugs into the competition: “La Sucrerie” into the Wide-cut category and “Les Anciens - Jour de  lavage” (Old Timers – Wash Day) into the Folklore category. Fabulous rugs, Jacques!

Throughout the month of April, there were numerous superb Zoom workshops.

Dawna’s appreciation of Karen Kaiser’s workshop   

As part of the OHCG Annual I was fortunate to participate in Karen Kaiser’s 2-day Zoom workshop, The Value of Values, Shading Made Easy. The focus was on how to use values in your rug to get the WOW factor, to move a piece from boring and dull to eye-catching and impressive. Karen supplied us with wonderful kits that contained everything we needed to hook our sampler. Anyone who knows Karen knows what a great teacher she is and how she encourages us to let our creativity shine through in our work.

In Memory of Sally Perodeau (October 10, 1933 to October 3, 2024) Respectfully submitted by Emmy Maten Sally Perodeau (1933-2024) We are saddened by the recent passing of one of our founding members, Sally Perodeau. In 1978, she joined the Guild which was just three years in existence at the time. Sally was keen to learn how to rug hook after being inspired by seeing a friend’s rug. She became a skilled rug hooker and made many fine and beautiful rugs, usually using narrow cuts of wool which allows more precision and detail. Sally was a wonderful organizer and was generous with her time and energy. She was the Guild President twice, from 1984-86 and again from 1997-98 and remained an active member until about 7 years ago. Show & Tell / Nancy Thompson

In memory of Nancy (Farnam) Thompson (1947 - 2024)  Respectfully submitted by Emmy Maten Nancy Thompson (1947-2024) The guild was saddened to learn of the recent loss of Nancy Thompson, member of our guild since the early 2000’s. Our guild member Cathy was a good sailing friend of Nancy’s and introduced Nancy to rug hooking and the Beaconsfield guild. Judith became her rug hooking teacher and helped her with most of her rugs. Nancy is remembered as generous, caring, giving, discreet, upbeat and happy. She had a good sense of humour. From 2019 to 2022, Nancy was an excellent secretary for the Beaconsfield Guild. Yet she preferred rug hooking to naming and dating her rugs; In her daughter Katie’s words “she would tell you that the rugs were finished long after they were started”. North Hero Fiber Fest 2024 By Laura D. On the 10th of August, I had the pleasure of driving down to North Hero, Vermont, as did some other members of our Guild to attend the Annual Fiber Fest, hosted by the Champlain Islands Fiber Bees. I was pretty excited since I had never participated before, and I was not disappointed! The ladies there were really welcoming, and they organized a teacup auction, a silent auction, and door prizes with everything from wool bundles, baskets, rug wool hooking tools, punch needle sets, books and much more. In the large, packed room almost everyone was working on very special rug hooking projects. “Fluff and Peachy Bean Designs” and “Judith Hotchkiss Designs and Dyeworks” were the two vendors present for the occasion and they had quite a stash of colourful wool, hooks, punch needle yarn, kits, and patterns for sale! Picnic

BHCG’s Annual Picnic  By Dawna Matthew June 8, 2024 Our picnic was a great success again this year! We had over 60 attendees along with some helpful partners who gave a hand with the set up and take down. It was wonderful to see so many friends from neighbouring groups and inspiring to see their projects during Show and Tell. We had guests from North Hero Fiber Bees, Martintown’s Wild and Woollys, the Brome County Rug Hookers, the Ormstown group, Ottawa’s Old Forge, Track 2 and St Henri along with our own BHCG members. What a great turnout. The welcoming grounds of Centennial Hall. Our lovely greeters!    Some Martintown friends amongst the many who enjoyed this annual gathering.  We were nervous about the weather, but the rain held off and everyone was fine under pop-up tents kindly supplied by several members.
