BHCG - Annual General Meeting - Spring 2012    Saturday morning, April 21, 2012, the Beaconsfield Hooking Crafters Guild held its Annual General Meeting at Centennial Hall. There being a quorum present, the following members were elected by acclamation to the Executive: Louise G. de Tonnancour, President, Denise Morrissette, Vice-President, June Weisbord, Treasurer and Denise Vandenbemden, Secretary. Introduction of Rug Registry Form to BHCG in 2012 By Maria Romero and Rose Kandy The BHCG Website Committee designed a form and presented it to the members for approval in the Spring of 2012. The purpose was to request all members who were showing rugs in the 2012 BHCG Exhibition to fill out a form for each rug they would show. The Website Committee would photograph all the rugs at the Exhibition and then add a picture of each rug to the appropriate completed form for the BHCG records. Members could also have a copy for their own records. The pictures and details of each rug would be featured in the Gallery section of the Website. With forms filled in and picture inserted, it made it much easier for the Committee to plan and showcase members’ rugs. Rug Registry Form (2012)

2012 Website Come see our new Website at www.beaconsfieldrughooking.com and browse through the fresh new pages. We took a good look at our old site and came to the conclusion that after four years, it was time to revamp it. We started by redesigning the header and layout, which immediately gave a crisp new look to the site. We also took into account navigation and content to make a more functional and user-friendly Website. Our new menus allow you to access information quickly. The Reflection, Transparency and Absorption of Colours by Rose Kandy On March 17, 2012, fifteen or so Beaconsfield Crafters Guild members met at Centennial Hall to attend a talk and overhead presentation given by Lois Morris. Using a variety of pictures, Lois taught us how to study and look intensely at a composition and note all there is to see. In the Fall, Lois Morris will be offering a rug hooking course based on this subject. This should be challenging, but a real learning opportunity. This is a selection of rugs from our September 2010 retrospective exhibition, held at Centennial Hall, to celebrate the Guild’s 35th anniversary. Ironman. Original by  Ailish O'Keeffe Ailish O'Keeffe Ironman My daughter Trish is a breast cancer survivor – when she was having chemo and radiation she decided she needed to have a goal – her goal was to do the Canadian Ironman – which she did the year after completing her treatments. She has completed many more Ironmen since then –in Penticton, BC, Montreal, QC Lake Placid, NY, St.Croix, US Virgin Islands, Las Vegas,NV, as well as marathons, half-marathons, etc. The rug is a tribute to her accomplishments and I used the logos from some of her races – including Race Across America (a 3000 mile bicycle race over 4,800 km). Mug Rug Workshop    by Louise G. de Tonnancour    Mug Rug Workshop. Illustration by Maria Romero. Heart and Stripes, a Linda MacDonald design hooked by Carolyn Ells.  On Saturday, February 18, 2012, in a most pleasant setting, 21 participants attended the Mug Rug workshop given by 11 members of Beaconsfield Hooking Crafters Guild, who busied themselves teaching small groups and serving coffee and hot chocolate to all. To end the day on a high note, all the new ruggers were given certificates of participation. As well, prizes were awarded to Lily Chin (3rd place), Carlos Borjas (2nd place) and Marianela Rosado (1st place) for the progress they made and the quality of their individual mug rugs. Winter Kickoff Luncheon_    par Kay Cousineau    2012 Luncheon - Left to right: Linda Henderson and Louise G. de Tonnancour On Saturday January 21 st , members put aside their hooking to enjoy a delicious winter luncheon. Then, our very innovative convener, Linda H., who previously had had everyone submit humorous personal anecdotes, tidbits or facts from their past, collated this information on sheets of paper which she circulated to members. The game was to match the member to the anecdote. Of course, this contest gave rise to a great deal of laughter. Prizes were awarded to the winners. A Young Girl’s Wish List  Designed and hooked by Lois Morris This hooking is my interpretation of what most young girls think is the Big Deal: clothes, jewellery, flowers, money, a good time and a man. This is a multi-media rug hooked with a variety of fabrics other than the usual wool. The gold fabric cinched in the centre represents clothing, the belt was hooked using gold leather, with a tortoise shell buckle in the centre. The hat was made using multi-coloured velour yarn with clipped loops. The necklace, earrings, handle and frame of the purse are hooked in chain stitch using elastic cord. A gold button is the clasp, while the ring is a silver filigrane button. Le martini glass and contents were hooked out of a clear plastic bag cut on #3. The bracelets are...

Indigo Workshop with Valerie by L.G. de Tonnancour Indigo with Valerie Walker   Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 9 AM , I met Yanick Duchesne (from St-Henri Crafters) at Espace Fibre on Augustin-Cantin St. , in Montreal . We went there to learn how to dye with indigo, in a course especially tailored for rug hookers. After a warm welcome and a quick tour of the studio and gallery, our teacher, Valerie Walker, began by teaching us what protective measures we must take when handling such volatile materials as natural and chemical dyestuffs. Valerie is a trained engineer and we appreciated both her scientific knowledge and practical advice. Report on Carolyn Ells' Needle-Felting Workshop by Candace Fradette Carolyn Ells On Saturday, November 19 th , our fellow rug-hooker, Carolyn Ells, was kind enough to offer a workshop on Needle Felting. After seeing some of Carolyn's creations last year using this technique, we were more than pleased to accept her offer to give us a lesson. Having distributed to us individual packages of sample wool, foam pieces and a very sharp needle, Carolyn gave us clear instructions enabling each of us to create some lovely Christmas decorations, broaches and 3-D animals. Our day trip to Shelburne, Vermont By Maria Romero By 8:30 in the morning on Saturday, November 12, 2011, Louise G. de Tonnancour, Denise Morissette, Carolyn Ells and myself were on the road to Vermont to go to the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild's bi-annual exhibition at the Shelburne Museum. The theme was "All the live long day - A celebration of working, industry and innovation"; Betty Bouchard (Richmond), Bev Conway (Middlebury) and Helen Wolfel (Georgia) were the guests of honour. We admired about 450 rugs of various styles and sizes, some quite captivating. In the exhibition were displayed rugs from our BHCG members: Judith Dallegret, Maureen Rowe, Louise G. de Tonnancour and myself. The creativity at this much anticipated event more than met our expectations, which made filling out the "visitor's choice" form difficult. Fiber Day by Maria M. Romero Fiber Day was the brainchild of our president and the goals of the day were: a) to make known the activities of our guild; b) to promote an exchange of ideas between guilds dedicated to fibers and textile arts; c) to offer the participants the opportunity to appreciate other techniques related to textiles. Louise G. de Tonnancour, Beaconsfield Hooking Crafters Guild President, talk to the public Due to logistics and a lack of space, only guilds from Beaconsfield and Pointe-Claire were invited for the first edition of Fiber Day, however, eventually we extended the invitation to other groups in Westmount and Montréal.  Thus, on October 15th, 45 fiber enthusiasts met at the Beaconsfield Recreation Centre to share their passion for textile arts coming from Beaconsfield Quilters Guild, Lakeshore Stitchery Guild, Lakeshore Weavers, Montreal Knitting Guild, Westmount Quilters Guild, and the Beaconsfield Hooking Crafters Guild (BHCG).
