Save the day!    By Dawna Matthew    As many of you are aware, Candace, Ti and myself have been following the St Lawrence College program which offers a Certificate in traditional rug hooking. We attend our final course next the first week in July and part of the curriculum involves holding a show or display and we’d love for you to attend! We realize this is quite far to travel but some of you may be in the area on holiday or visiting friends. Graduating Students Show Invitation

Our Annual Picnic        June 12, 2022          Our first return to our annual picnic since 2019 was small-scale but appreciated by all. Members from several nearby Guilds joined us. We were spared the rain of some surrounding areas as the sun shone down on us! A beautiful setting to hook with friends Everyone was very generous towards our fund-raising for the Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. There were door prizes for everyone.  June 7, 2022  Culture and Inclusion Project – our 3rd and 4th Workshops While our first 2 workshops were with elementary students, today’s workshops were with high school students, totalling 26 students. Six of our Guild members (Juliet, Dawna, Chris, Muriel, Kitt, Emmy) volunteered to animate today’s workshops. Following introductions, we each held up rugs and let each student pick their favorite. The animal rugs were very popular! Instead of providing a design to hook as we had done with the younger students, we gave the high school students total freedom to create what they felt like hooking. Our students worked from the backside of their frames, using our adapted Proddy stick or a chop stick to push loops through the netting, somewhat like doing punch needle hooking. How to finish the edging of a rug using cording    June 6, 2022 At our last Monday hook-in of the season, Dawna treated us to a demonstration of how to finish the edging of a rug using cording.  Standing: Karen, Sue, Jacques, Brenda. Sitting: Kitt, Dawna. Here is a recap of the technique: 1) To prepare the cording, use masking tape to “finish” the ends, like the tips of a shoelace. 2) Lay the cord down snuggly up against the last row of hooking. Do not start at a corner. Baste the cord in place. 3) Using wool yarn, whip over and under the cord, covering it uniformly and completely. 4) Lay another cord, which could be a different thickness, tucked up against the whipped cord. Repeat the basting and whipping process. You could choose a different coloured yarn. 5) For the final cording, wrap the background fabric up and over to the front and tuck it underneath the outer cord and complete your final whipping.
