Show & Tell : Sugaring Off

Easter marks warmer days in Quebec, the beginning of spring, and the start of sap flowing in the sugar maples. Our rugs in this month’s Show and Tell bring back cherished memories of a visit with friends or family to a rustic sugar shack in the countryside. Traditional Québécois music accompanied by the smells of wood smoke, bacon, and sweet maple syrup fill the air.

I picked up this rug, a scene of a horse pulling a maple sap harvesting sleigh near a sugar shack, at Finnegan’s Market about 6 years ago. Unfortunately, there is no label nor any markings as to who had hooked it, nor in what year. I think it is hooked with nylons and, at some point, had some repairs done to it. This piece was exhibited during our 2017 Show.

Sugaring Off was a Rittermere pattern. I dyed the sky, fields, and snow. The rest was made from old clothes, a sports jacket of Derek’s and skirts and jumpers of mine and the girls that I overdyed where needed. The sleigh was hooked out of unravelled burlap and leather. I also used leather for the horse’s bridle. The people and trees in the foreground were carved. The border was a navy-blue housecoat. This piece was shown in the BHCG 40th Anniversary Retrospective Exhibition in 2015.

Sugaring off has always been an annual event for me during my married life with my husband and children, especially at the Sucrerie de la Montagne.
This is the first rug I ever hooked with Judith Dallegret. It was fun to do and an interesting piece visually because of the different perspectives involved. I enjoyed doing the sky and the snow with all the variegations. I used my own stash except for the trees; Judith dyed that wool for me.
