St. Lawrence College
Advanced Rug Hooking Design
July 18 - 24, 2016
In July four of our members, Candace Fradette, Claire Fradette, Ti Seymour and myself attended a week long course at St. Lawrence College in Brockville, Ontario. This was an advanced rug hooking class, Contemporary Primitive and Wide Cut, and is part of a program which leads to certification in Fibre Arts – Traditional Rug Hooking. Sixteen women participated, some were not affiliated with a particular guild but along with Beaconsfield the following guilds had members present:
Frontenac Rug Hookers
Martintown’s Wild and Wooly Rug Hookers
Ottawa’s Olde Forge
Prescott’s Hoops and Hooks
Rideau Valley Boots and Baskets
Women Matters, Lansdowne
What a wonderful group of ladies! We chatted a lot, laughed a lot and learned a lot!! Everyone shared their ideas and experiences. We were asked to bring in some of our finished pieces for a show and tell with the class next door. They were taking the beginners course with Carol Shewan. That is when we truly realized how much talent was in those two rooms!!!
Our teacher was Laura Boszormeny, who is not only an excellent teacher but a fun loving lady who knows how to get the most out of her students. We all came out of the class with new skills and even if we may not have produced a truly primitive rug we have a much better understanding of the category. All of us made satisfying progress on our rugs and left with enthusiasm to get home and get hooking!!!
Next summer’s course will be “Flamboyant Florals”, large, oversized blossoms done with dip dyes! I’ll definitely be signing up! And if you watch the St Lawrence College website you will find more information in early spring.
