Show & Tell : Winter Scenes

Winter can bring frigid north winds and icy streets, yet also, the pristine beauty of freshly fallen snow, delighting the artist in us all. Snow crystals reflect surrounding light and colours, creating shadows of blue or green or even pink. Winter scenes depicting homes conjure up feelings of coziness and refuge from the cold, while horses and sleighs bring back vivid images of action and power. No wonder winter scenes are so inspiring.

Winter Scene with Sleigh

Unknown artist
Creation date unknown
Collection: Isabelle Rollin and Jacques Lepage
12" x 17.5", not including the frame

This rural Quebec winter scene with a sleigh presents a beautiful effect of movement and perspective. The artist’s initials appear in the lower right corner.
In 2014 we bought this framed rug at a church sale in Valleyfield, Quebec. We are not certain of the material that was used to hook this piece. Since it is framed with a backing, and old, we did not want to risk damaging the fibers by taking it out of its secure framing. The piece is in good condition although the colours have faded with time. It seems to be hand-cut in unequal widths of #2 to #5.
This piece was exhibited during our 2017 Show.

Red House in the Woods

Creation date unknown
Collection: Isabelle Rollin and Jacques Lepage
12" x 15"

We bought this at a garage sale in St-Clet, Quebec, over 20 years ago, before we knew much about this art. It is hooked or punch-hooked with thin wool yarn. The colours are still vibrant even though it is quite vintage. We do not know who made this pretty little winter scene.
This piece was exhibited during our 2015 Show.

Approximately 13 in x 18 in

This rug was one of my earlier favourites. The original idea came from a photo of my neighbour's woodshed in the snow at our country place. With permission, I made a painting using it as a starting point. Then I decided to try a hooked rug from the painting. I found it easier to do after solving some of the colour problems in the painting.
It was made totally of recycled wool strips in no. 4 and 6 cuts. I like to use recycled wool strips in keeping with the history of the craft in earlier days. I showed this work at a craft fair at Lac-des-Seize-ÃŽles where it was admired. There, my favourite artist Jane Magee was impressed with the rug and we ran a wonderful deal where she got my rug, and I got my favourite painting of hers. I never thought l could afford one of her paintings. We were both very happy.

Replica of an Antique rug of a Painting by Clarence Gagnon
2017
28” X 38"
#6 Hand-dyed wool on linen backing

The original rug was a replica of a painting by Clarence Gagnon, a Canadian painter. My father bought this original rug in 1936 for $3.50 in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec, on a trip back home to Nova Scotia with my mother that summer.
It hung in the living room of the home I grew up in. By the 1990s, it was falling apart and was extremely fragile, so I decided to hook a replica. I had to learn how to hook first and so I headed off to Beaconsfield Rug Hooking Guild to learn. A big thank you to Sally Perodeau for taking me that day under her wing and thus began my rug hooking passion. Here is my result many years later.

Clarence Gagnon. Village laurentien, 1927. Oil painting. 73x92 cm, Collection du Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
