Report on OHCG AGM 2013 in Kingston, ON

Kingston, Ontario (May 24-26, 2013)_

Three lovely busy days all about hooking! The venue was easy to access and large enough for all events to be held under one roof.  Ontario Area 1 were in charge of organizing the event and they did a wonderful job. We were welcomed at the Registration Desk with a handmade bag containing our schedules among other goodies, We were given name tags held by cleverly made lanyards attached with a button. including our Name Tags held by. Recycling at its best!

Saturday morning the Annual Meeting ran smoothly and finished exactly on time. We then visited the many vendors that were present, and once the rug display was open to members, we immediately visited the exquisite work done by so many of our fellow hookers. We took many  pictures as we toured the exhibit and went back again and again to certain rugs. Classes were ongoing during the day  and a gala dinner was held in the evening. Sunday morning, more visits to the vendors, also to the scissors sharpener who was on hand (would suggest that there be one at every AGM, if it is not already so). Ailish O'Keeffe and I also picked up a couple of the patterns for the Pan-AM Games 2015, hopefully BHCG can contribute a few mats, they are only 15 x 20 inches; a good summer project.

Our own teacher , Lois Morris,  gave a class to 40 people on Reflections, Transparency and Absorption. Many thanks to Lois Morris, Brenda Ticehurst, Jeanne Osler and Louise  G. de Tonnancour for carrying our rugs to the exhibition and for working on displaying them Friday and then dismantling everything late Sunday afternoon. Also special thanks to the drivers who were on hand to help.

 Our special thanks to all the hard-working organizers and volunteers.

There is one quality I observed from all the participating rug hookers and vendors that we met - all were so good humored. Definitely, rug hooking is good for the soul!

Outdoor Poster Exhibit    July 22, the City of Beaconsfield’s “Happy Hour by the Water” event marked the official opening of our outdoor poster exhibit. Almost 900 people showed up for the concert and also viewed the poster display. Julie Poirier-Monette, co-ordinator for Beaconsfield’s cultural life, announced the poster exhibit to the public and read out a heartfelt message from our Guild thanking the City for creating this beautiful poster display of our work and inviting those drawn to our craft to visit our website and Facebook page and join us in September for Monday meetings.   Panels 1 and 2. Rug Hooking Tour

Trip to Nova Scotia   By: Dawna Matthew While attending Green Mountain Rug School this past June I was invited and encouraged to take part in a weeklong “Rug Hooking Tour of Nova Scotia” organized by Lynn Soule of The Champlain Islands Fiber Bees. And what an amazing adventure it turned out to be! From September 12 to 18 I joined 62 other hookers on a huge bus that departed from Vermont and headed off to Nova Scotia. Champlain Island Fiber Bees Our first stop was Searsport Rug Hooking in Verona, Maine, then on to the lovely Algonquin Resort in St Andrews, NB. Next day we hit Deanne Fitzpatrick’s studio in Amhurst, NS. Deanne opened her studio on a Sunday especially for us and did we have fun! We shopped and no one dropped!! The Cushion Project: Barachois Historic Church_ Grand Barachois, New Brunswick, By Emmy Maten 200 Hooked Cushions for my 200th Logo The Barachois Historic Church, now a local museum, art gallery, and summer concert venue, commences its 200th year celebrations with “ 200 Hooked Cushions for my 200th ”. The cushions will be permanently exhibited on the old wooden church pews. The opening exhibition of these donated hooked cushions will be held August 18, during the 2019 World Acadian National Congress. An exposition catalogue will be produced to include photos of the cushions and information about the artisans, their creation, as well as technical details. Picnic

Our Annual Picnic        June 12, 2022          Our first return to our annual picnic since 2019 was small-scale but appreciated by all. Members from several nearby Guilds joined us. We were spared the rain of some surrounding areas as the sun shone down on us! A beautiful setting to hook with friends Everyone was very generous towards our fund-raising for the Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. There were door prizes for everyone.
